General discussion

final cut pro and how much i don't know, obviously

Jul 20, 2007 1:00PM PDT

i want to buy the the iMac and want to get final cut pro as well. which is pricey.
when i went to the apple store, the clerk went into huge detail about how i had to have final cut pro installed on the computer at the mfg co. on and on. so since i didn't have 2700 right then i opted to wait.
later i was in the midwest and happened into a CompuServ store and they told me that was a bunch of bs. that i could get them (the computer and fcp )separately; download fcp later.
why all this hogwash? getting a new computer is a huge deal for me. i've been in film school and was taught on the Avid Media Composer, blah blah..blah. on a very tight budget.
any feedback, any, will be appreciated.

I have no idea why FCP would be

represented like that - makes no sense. I bought my iMac - then later, bought and installed FCP... no big deal - just feeding discs during the install like any other large application install.

If you are still a student, there is a FCP student discount - but if it is anything like the past, the FCP bought under the student program is not "upgradeable"... though I bought Final Cut Studio (with FCP 5.1) and via the Apple update feature, it is now at 5.1.4... I just think I am not allowed to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2... which is OK with me at this point...

You can also get a few $ off a Mac - again, if you are still a student... The catch is that your school's supposed to be registered... It is worth a shot:

Regular Apple Authorized retailers are not allowed to sell at the educational discount... campus bookstore or direct from Apple, I *think*.

FCP

If you go to the Apple Store (on-line) you will see that is possible to purchase various pieces of software in addition to the base OS and its components.

FCP can be purchased separately there and, as a free option, can be installed onto your new machine before it leaves the factory.

Just why the sales guy should have represented it as not being available as a separate purchase is anyone's guess but, most likely, the two of you were talking at cross purposes. I guess it would be normal, had you been purchasing or enquiring about FCP at the same time as purchasing a computer, for the sales guy to assume that you would want it installed. The conversation goes downhill from there.

As already pointed out, FCP and a whole bunch of other stuff can be had without the purchase of a computer. Be aware that FCP is not available as a download. You have to purchase the physical disks.
