Fill in shape with color

Jun 3, 2005 11:56PM PDT

Windows XP Pro SP2 with MS Word 2002:

I have drawn a triangle using 'line', around some text. i.e. I first typed some text, then drew a triangle around the text, so that the text were inside the triangle. All these were done inside a text box. Now, I want to fill in the triangle with color. How do I do it ? I tried to highlght or select the triangle to fill, but was not able to do so. I only managed to fill in the text box. Help appreciated. Thanks.

Work-around

I don't know if this can be done in Word. A triangle isn't one of the official shapes.

As a work-around I suggest you make the triangle (including the text) in Paint, then save it as gif-file, and include that file (it's a rectangle containing the triangle) in your Word document. Paint does have a "fill" option for any enclosed area.

Do NOT use just a line, instead use Line, Freeform

If you use a Freeform line, you can easily define the 3 points that make a triangle. By just clicking down each of the three points the triangle will close with 3 straight edges (conversely, if you hold down the mouse button while defining the edges the line will be rough and jagged).

Once you have the shape defined (and you can use the 9 control points to move, stretch and rotate as needed) you can then right-click select it to "Format AutoShape" to adjust the color and transparency.
