Resolved Question

Files on C on Hard Drive is not available

Jun 26, 2011 4:56AM PDT

Hello everyone! I am a new member.
I have a problem with my XP desktop. When I start my computer, the desktop is blank. When I go in my computer and on c: properties, it shows hard drive is 96% full but I cant access the files, when I click on c and a 'download' wich has most of the files is blank.
Can someone please help me with this issue. Is it a virus or bad sectors on hard drive and how to resolve it.
Thank you.
Kind Regards,
Ali

OR

OR you could use the tools noted in that discussion to remove it and unhide your files.

The malware noted has some dozen names now. You can wait till you find it's current name or you can move forward. Your choice.

Next?

While I never read what pest or issue caused this, forgive me but I have to ask where are the backup copies?

Moving to OTHER RECOVERY SOFTWARE. Try the titles at the top of the CNET STORAGE FORUM at this link. NOTHING IS ASSURED HERE. We don't have a cause, we apparently don't have backup copies.

Read about free and trial recovery tools at -> http://forums.cnet.com/7723-7588_102-354911.html

Try This Program To "unhide" Those Files
Jul 19, 2011 2:00AM PDT

Some of the recent malware causes such files to be hidden. Download the "Unhide.exe" file from the link below and run it. It should allow you to see those files again.

Clicking on the link below will immediately open a download dialogue window.
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

And one more note.. Although you ran the scans once and removed malware, please restart the computer and run the scans AGAIN to make sure everything is completely gone.. I tend to run them repeatedly till nothing is detected.

Hope this helps.

Yep, Those Tools Will Remove Most Any Malware And...
Jun 30, 2011 6:03AM PDT

...the "unhide.exe" program can be run safely after using the removal tools to clean up the machine.. "unhide.exe" basically changes any damaged registry entries and replaces them with the correct entry.. If nothing's damaged, then the entries stay the same.

Hope this helps.
