General discussion

files changed to read only...blah!

Apr 3, 2005 1:44PM PDT

I just burned my entire photo collection onto a DVD-RW. Now when I try and make any changes to a photo I can't because the software (whatever one I'm using at the time) says that the files are read only. I've tried to change the files by selecting the entire collection and even individual files, but nothing seems to work. The original files are not read only.
How did this happen?
How do I get all the file on my DVD-RW to NOT be read only?
TIA

This is how it works.

When you copy the file back from the media, just unset the readonly bit and you're done.

The thing is...I'm going to be using the DVD media as my storage, sooo...except for those few time, I won't be coping the files back to the hd...I'd like to be making my changes to the file as there are on the DVD-RW...hmmm, maybe this is not possible?

Possible, but not a good idea.

I found InCD and DirectCD to work properly about 99.99% of the time. While this would cure the read-only flag issue, it does, once in awhile lose every file that is on the DVDRW media. Since 99.99% of the time isn't good enough, I tossed it out and use the more reliable mutli-session or closed session methods which will result in the read-only flag having to be unchecked.

Remember that just like a hard disk, that one DVD-RW needs a backup too. I run into too many people that were under the impression that it didn't need a backup and had lost all their pictures.
