Question

File Type problem

Jan 9, 2014 1:11AM PST

Unable to open a file with .doc extension into word. Default is set at WordPad. When I try to change this and use "Other Programs" it lists Internet Explorer, Paint, Windows Media Player, Notepad, Windows Media Center, and Windows Photo Viewer. When I go to "Browse it lists the following : "ASUS, AVAST Software, Common Files, DVD Maker, Google, Intel' Internet Explorer, MSBuilds, Paragon Software, Realtek, Reference Assemblies, SeaMonkey, VS Revo Group, Windows Defender, Windows Mail, Windows Media Player, Windows NT, Windows Photo Viewer, Windows Portable, Devices, and Windows Sidebar." But no MS Word shows up in the list, yet the program is there and operational. If I create a word document and save it, it gets saved as a wordpad document. If on the other hand I open MS Word and select File/Open and double click on a file it will open in word format and if I open a document in Rich Text Format it will open it in MS Word.
Is this a problem with Microsoft Office or with Windows 7 Pro x64. Any suggestions as to how I can get Word to be the default for .doc

Answer
To me this sounds like a Windows tutorial issue.

That is, when you don't see an app you want to associate with on the list you should see a way to go find the .EXE you want it to open with. If I had this issue I would go find WINWORD.EXE on some Programs folder and associate it with that.

Here's a google on that.

RE: Windows tutorial

I tried various ways but was not able to get it right. Tried reinstalling MS Office - that didn't help. So I bit the bullet and reinstalled Windows 7 and made sure that I installed everything on the CD disks that came with my Asus motherboard and then installed MS Office. Now, everything is like it should be.

Any reason why the OS took damage?

Most common are registry cleaners.

Possible reason
Jan 10, 2014 11:19PM PST

Newly built computer, nothing on it except what came with Win7 Cd and Asus Cd,s, not connected to internet. This is where I believe things began to go bad. I wanted to install a program (Paragon hard disk manager 14) and needed to insert serial No. and Key. They suggest to do copy paste which is what I wanted to do. I inserted a usb stick with that info that was in Word format, but since I had not installed MS Office yet, the computer wanted to know what to open the document with and my choice was word pad. For whatever reason, word pad was unable to handle this, that is, what came up was a bunch of letters and symbols.. I pulled the usb stick, shut down the beginning installation of Paragon and rebooted the computer and installed MS Office. It was at this point that I noticed the .doc extension would only open in word pad.
I believe that the above scenario is where the "corruption" took place and I was never able to get it corrected except by reinstalling the OS. Remember, I am the ancient one and not very computer savvy.

Some companies hate me too.

I've been known to test the product for readiness by doing things like unplugging the power unannounced. If it survives I continue on with other crazy tests like randomly pressing buttons. This is 2014. Time for no more carp.
