i ran network setup wizard on both of the computers (both are XP), and i right clicked the file i wanted to share and put share to network. i already double checked the workgroup name, and it's the same on both computers. when i go to the work group and click on the other computer a window pops up saying:
\\family is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access perimissions.

The network path was not found.

in WinXP, prior to SP2, make sure the Internet Connection Firewall box is unchecked. If you are running a 3rd party firewall you need to configure it to allow access to the locally assigned IP addresses.
If this doesn't help, I need to know how you are setup. Router, firewall, ect.
