Question

FILE HISTORY WINDOWS 10

Jul 15, 2015 2:08PM PDT

Hello, I am currently running a external hard drive for my windows 8.1 file history, what happens when windows 10 rolls out? Will my backup file history still be useable since it's been backing up windows 8.1?

Looking forward to some info, and thanks in advance.

EXTERNAL BACKUP FOR FILE HISTORY
Jul 15, 2015 5:51PM PDT

I hope I don't have to buy another external drive,do you know if MS10 will even have file history? I would like to see a backup similar to windows 7 via the control panel, so I am guessing I may wind up with 2 worthless CANIVO drives.

Thank you for your reply

Answer
I'm going with no.

I've yet to see Microsoft implement backup or history transfers across OS versions.

Frankly, Microsoft's backup software has a long history. While it did work, it filled many forums with pleas for help recovering from Microsoft Backup (or whatever title was used.)

Because of this I can not advise using any Microsoft branded or Microsoft written backup software or feature. Backup using any other method, process or other apps.

Reports say yes to file history in WIndows 10.

And with that I again have to write it's not something I'll use since Microsoft's record is so poor about restoring if the OS gets blown. PCs and Windows are under heavy attack. I know since just last week I unwrapped a new Windows 8 PC and it was alarming to see how many infected downloads was on the first page of the stock browser and Bing search.

Fortunately I know about Ninite.com and so I used that. And now a link and word about Ninite. Please read http://www.howtogeek.com/201354/ninite-is-the-only-safe-place-to-get-windows-freeware/

As to the 2 worthless drives, I picked up a pair of 2TB Canvio Basics. They seem nice and work with about any backup app.

PS. Here's what I don't expect to happen.

Your prior file history will survive the OS upgrade.

But you seem to be asking if the Windows 10 File History will use external drives. Now while it appears to do so, Windows 10 has not shipped so we have to wait a few weeks to have an authoritative answer.

Windows 10 RTM 10240 now available to insiders
Jul 15, 2015 6:47PM PDT

If you have the Windows 10 Technical Preview installed, you can download the 10240 update. MS says it's the RTM version. It can only be installed on a system running the Technical Preview though because MS has inactivated all the COA keys and they aren't supporting clean installs.
So there's good news and bad news here.
