Question

File-Edit-View-Tools Menu in FILE EXPLORER Missing

I have literally spent HOURS searching the web to find an answer to my problem. Many of the "solutions" I found were given by people who misunderstood the question being asked. This is NOT about INTERNET Explorer - it is about FILE Explorer (formerly Windows Explorer), the Windows utility that has been used for DECADES to browse drives and folders on PCs.

There used to be a menu bar near the top of the page where you could click on File, Edit, View or Tools to open drop-down menus. It was simple, clean, and VERY useful. This menu bar is nowhere that I can find. It seems to have been replaced with some fancy "ribbon bar" and a Quick Access Tool Bar which, while showing a LOT more choices, is NOT WHAT I WANT.

My question is simple - Is the old Menu Bar GONE FOR GOOD, or can it be "reactivated" in some way? And before anyone replies with the following answers, they are NOT applicable here:

1) Press F11 to max/min the size of the window.....X
2) Press Alt or Alt-F to temporarily display the menu bar.....X
3) Check "Always show menus" in Folder Options\View\Files and Folders.....X

NONE of these solutions work.

So, CAN this "Classic Menu Bar" be restored to File Explorer in Windows 10, or is it really gone for good???

Edit: I don't know why this got posted under Computer Newbies. I have been involved with computers, computer networks and various software projects for over 30 years, both in the areas of teaching and building, but still cannot solve this question. Maybe I'm just getting old and senile, but there must be an answer out there somewhere... I just like things that are familiar and WORK WELL. Not all NEW and IMPROVED changes are BETTER.

Re: Menu bar in File Explorer

I'm afraid that Proffitt misunderstood your post also. Sorry for that.

It seems it's gone in Windows 10. It was optional already in Windows 7, and maybe Microsoft found or thought is was hardly used anymore. Like the menu bar was removed in 2007 from MS Office (without even being optionally); hardly anybody minds now.

You'll have to learn to live with it, or use another file manager. I like xyplorer, but it's $40 for a standard license. There might be cheaper ones that meet your requirements.

PS. Unless a post is moved by the forum manager, it stays in the forum the poster chooses to post in. Maybe you by accident chose Computer Newbies when you selected a forum in https://www.cnet.com/forums/ ? It says it's a required field. I don't have any other explanation.

You're right.

Do try Windows File Explorer and tap the F11 key. File, Home, Share, View will vanish so I was thinking about that.

Omni555 will have to indeed look at other file managers.

Menu bar

I'll agree the menu bar in file explorer is filled with clutter.

Instead of making it simple with drop down menus they stuffed things into the menu bar.

Perhaps that's what the 20yr olds who built w10 liked.
