File back-up recommendation

I am trying to back up files on two different PC laptops. This is just for security reasons in case either laptop is stolen or crashes. The majority of the files are music, photos, or basic documents (Microsoft Office files, PDFs, etc.).

Does anyone have a recommendation for how best to do this? I started to look at external hard drives, but maybe there is a different way. Also, I'm not sure if I would need to purchase separate external hard drives for each laptop or if one hard drive can be used on multiple laptops. It doesn't necessarily need to even be super-portable, although I'd like to store it somewhere without needing to take up a ton of space or breaking the bank.

Thanks for any advice y'all have.
