When I install a PCI card IDE controller, do the drives attached get jumped as slave?

Each IDE connection on the PCI controller can have two IDE devices attached--the first on each channel must be jumpered either as master or master without slave (whatever the device requires) and the second device on each channel must be jumpered as a slave. Optionally you may be able to use Cable select which makes the master/slave determination based on which connector the device is connected to. On a cable select cable, one of the connectors (the "master connector") has pin #28 connected through to the cable, but the other (the "slave connector") has an open circuit on that pin (no connection).

In short, follow the directions of whatever IDE device you are connecting regarding how to set it up.

My hesitation stems from the fact that the 2 MB IDE channels are full. The instructions for installing drives that I have seen seem to imply to me that master = boot device. I guess that is not so. I will try cable select and if that fails master for this try.

Is this forum format cumbersome to you, or is it just me?

will depend on having the proper cable and whether or not the card's BIOS recognizes it. Go with whatever the manufacturer recommends.

Master or slave actually has little to do with "boot device" as that is determined by other means.

Here is a link that might "ease your mind" although it will take a little reading. http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/conf.htm

Partway down that page is a link named "check out this procedure" which steps you through seting up the configuration.
