FF Thunderbird problem

I have been using Firefox for about 2 weeks and like it. It seemed worthwhile to try their emailer Thunderbird and I gave it run. For the first several days I was very pleased with it in general, but then a problem surfaced.

For no clear reason, when I opened Thunderbird 3 days ago the left column which is entitled 'Local Folders' was missing new folders which I had recently created. This column does fortunately continue to show a proper 'inbox', 'sent', 'trash', etc. However, it now contains many folders that normally only were meant to be in 'my documents'. I have not be able to find those 'new folders' or the saved emails within them, nor am I able to delete or remove those extra folders like 'my pictures', 'my music', etc. which now reside there in unwelcomed positions. Can anyone help?

Thanks.
