Fear XP and Quake 4 wont play on my New XPS Dell 710h2c

Jun 1, 2007 2:58AM PDT

All these same games play on my dell 8250 with xp pro, my new dell has xp media, 4gig of ram qx6700 processor, nvidia sli gtx 8800 video,sb x-fi sound, I have updated everything i can. When it tries to load Fear XP, It comes up with FEARXP has encountered a problem and must close. When I try to load Quake 4, the screen just blinks and does nothing.I have downloaded all updates for both games.Dell techs tell me its not a hardware problem, but a software, could something be configured wrong?

Sure It's Not 'Vista' Media Center?
Jun 1, 2007 4:31AM PDT

Most new machines have Vista installed.. If so, then you'll need to check the game site to see if they've got any Vista compatible patches.. It may be a compatibility issue.

If you're sure it's XP Media Center, then start by disabling all the background programs and services that are not needed.. Similar problems are seen with various antivirus programs and antispyware programs.. If Norton or McAfee, have you tried disabling them prior to playing the game? Disabling their firewalls temporarily to see if that's the culprit?

Confirmed with the game site that the video card and it's drivers are supported?

Updated both the video and audio drivers on the machine?

Hope this helps.

Fear and Quake 4 wont play on my new Dell XPS 710 H2C
Jun 3, 2007 4:05PM PDT

Thanks for the tip grif, I have narrowed it down to "msconfig-Services-Windows Audio. When I disable this, both games will play, with no sound. The Fear XP gives an error message of "Failed to initialize sound driver "snddrv.dll" Execution may terminate... OK. I Have been playing the game like this but it sucks without sound. Would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thanks ED

OK Then...Have You Updated The Audio Drivers?
Jun 4, 2007 1:59AM PDT

Be sure to find the most recent audio driver for your audio card.

After researching that error message, apparently there are other users of "Fear" that are having similar problems.. One said to: "go to Fear , config and than options and than disable music".

Maybe that will help.

Updated Audio Drivers
Jun 4, 2007 5:35AM PDT

Yo! Grif, thanks for the response. I made sure I had the latest drivers off the dell web site for my card. My packing slip says I have a SB X-fi Xtrememusic sound card. I tried going into the Fear XP Config and disabled music, to no avail, then I went to Creatives site and found this feature where they will scan your computer for any available updates and it came back with a critical update for my card. I installed it, but again to no avail, then I went into Fear XP Config and disabled sound and tried the game again, this time I got sound leading up to the main screen where you load the game. When I loaded the game "no sound", so I tried loading a new game, same results. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. ED

After doing a search for your error message, it appears like a common problem with the game.. Maybe a patch will come out.\

Hope this helps.
