If you mean that the 98 installer is scanning the hard disk for errors, it is intolerent of hard disk surface problems. I'd run two tests to see if there is an issue.
1. The drive fitness test from your hard disk maker.
2. A memory test from http://www.memtest86.com
cleaned my hard drive of all partitions, because of the clutter, and to make a fresh start. fdisk the system-added a partition for dos, restarted my computer with the start-up and the windows cd and the sytem locks up at systems scan. What am i doing wrong once i reboot the system should read the disc and then install windows.
