This is a first for me. Will windows start up in SAFE mode? If it does, delete the directories. This should take care of the longfilename problem. If not, take out your original 98 cds and start rebuilding your environment. You may even have to reformat your hard drive. Unfortunately, you will lose all the data. Since 98 will no longer be supported by Microsoft, please try to upgrade to XP home or Pro. You will will be gratefull you did.
p.s. Don't even try to fully understand the error message! You'll get nightmares.
HP Pavilion Windows 98se Cannot start windows, when I try to boot a window will pop up stating that their are more than 27 drive letters and the rest after Z will be ignored. see what I did was copy some files off boot disk and into the command.com or config.sys files; inadvertently, making the files all directories. Now the computer won't complete boot up due to longfilenames, too many drives, corrupt config.sys etc. Now my C:\<DIR> includes, besides the typical directories, about NINETY directories that follow this pattern....<DIR000001> through <DIR000089> without any obvious extension. Can SomeOne Relate, If you can I would really be grateful. THX pizzler
