fatal error installation failed D:\i386\asms

i have a hp pav 360n with an amd athlon 1.6 processor windows xpsp2 recently i booted up and went thru everything ok till the windows screen then it just started rebooting would not start in any mode and would constantly keep rebooting unless i used disable auto start up i tried booting with a xp boot disc it would load everything til setup was supposed to start so i tried to reinstall xp with a cd finally got setup to run but when it gets to installing windows i gives me an error message data error cyclic redundancy check or a screen that says error: installation failed D:\i386\asms any ideas

Usually hardware related.

Failing CD media, CDROM drive or ever the hard disk are the repeating theme here. There is no software cure for this one.
