Question

Faster Hardwired Access

Apr 26, 2015 2:28AM PDT

I'm hoping someone can get me stated in the right direction. I have Mediacom internet service with a HitronTechnologies wireless router. I want improved internet speed to my two gaming desktops. I have coaxial cable in the whole house and would like to run a faster direct connection from my Mediacom box to these two rooms via coax. Any suggestions on how to do this properly.

You said coax...do you mean Ethernet?

Gibabit LAN speed is easily accomplished but that won't improve internet speed. That's up to your ISP and the size your wallet.

50 meg service

I have 50 meg service but the house is wired for cable TV over coaxial cable. I wish it were eithernet wired instead.

My WiFi hits 54.

802.11g is 54 megabits a second. My wired network is 100. So while Gigabit would be nice, it won't be any faster.

That complicates things

There is a small chance that the modem could be moved but you'd need to have a wiring schematic of the house to know if it's possible. And, even so, that won't improve internet speed. Your ISP sets that limit based on what they can offer and what you want to pay. Trying to improve that would be like hooking up a fire hose to an outdoor faucet with the idea you could fill a swimming pool faster. It won't happen. You can improve your overall reliability by avoiding wireless in the home, however. This means your two desktops should have Ethernet back to the router/modem. Good luck with your project.
