Fast Shutter Lag

May 17, 2007 2:25AM PDT

How can you tell when a camera has burst or continuous mode? What phrases can I look for in the camera specs because Best Buy and other electronics shops are not using that wording that I can see. For example, how would I know (except for asking here) if the Olympus FE210 or the Canon PSA550 have this option?

Thanks,
Beth

You can visit dpreview.com or do a google search for your camera's review. Or even visit the manufacturer's website. All these will have the specifications, and the some review sites will compare the camera to others of similar caliber.

Performance

You can always find specifications on the camera manufacturers website.

However.....Almost none will say anything about shutter lag.

...........

Here is where I look for that information:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html

Click the check mark at the right end of the white window directly under "Camera Reviews"

Select the camera and you will be taken to a review of that camera.

In the white window on that page, select the page that is called
"Steve's Conclusions"

On that page you will find at least one paragraph about performance.
All of the information you want will be there, including shutter lag.

He uses two figures for shutter lag:
Using prefocus (2 stage shutter button usage)
and just pushing down the shutter button.

Most cameras will show 0.1 second for the fist figure.
The second figure is the one that counts the most.
In the case of the Olympus FE210, that figure is over 1 second.
(that is slow, slow, shutter lag)

A good shutter lag is 0.3 second or faster.
A long lens camera will almost always have a longer shutter lag, because it takes longer to focus. (unusually about 0.5 or 0.6 second).
