Fan Speed

Aug 28, 2017 11:28AM PDT

Is there a way to control the speed of my fans using a fan hub (Thermaltake Commander FP). I bought corsair fans with 3 pin headers only.

Should be OK.

I've used fan speed controllers with 2 wire fans. HOWEVER this doesn't feedback the actual speed but I can dial the speed up and down.

Sorry but I defer to their product manual and their support for deeper details. But yes. Should work.

Thanks. I also read some forum threads that most of the mobos now support pwm with only 3 pin header fans.

Doubtful

The short answer.

You can PWM a 2 wire fan but there is no sensor for speed regulation.

Default speed ?

So if I can't control the speed what is the default speed of the fans then ? Is it always gonna run at normal or max RPM ?

If you feed the fan a constant voltage it will run at it normal speed.
As to what speed that is you would need to look up the specs on the fan.
Often it is written on the fan label.

Put another way.

You can control the speed but without feedback. Just like the gas pedal in a car. You can press harder but don't know the speed you'll achieve. "Speed regulation" versus speed control.

You can control the speed with PWM even with a 2 wire fan. The keyword being YOU. You move the control it goes faster or slower. With the speed sensor it maintains the speed on its own.
