Fan on, LEDs are on briefly and then stop, black screen

Dec 6, 2009 10:56AM PST

HP Pavillion dv9310us Notebook PC from 2007. AMD Turion 64x2, Vista OS, Nvidia GeForce Go 6150 graphics. Friend wanted me to check this laptop out and see if I could troubleshoot the thing.

Fan comes on, the LEDs are on briefly and then stop and re-start, but the LCD display stays black screen. No error messages and no beeps.

Tried draining the capacitors and resetting the system, but still get the same thing. Switched out the RAM and this didn't help. Tried new battery, but still no change. The power cord LED is blue and does not blink. It just sits there for hours trying to boot repeatedly, with blue LEDs coming on for about 10 seconds and then turning off for a few seconds and coming back on for about 10 seconds, over and over.

Have tried the HP troubleshooting blink codes thing, but HP says the blinks will show in the 'Caps Lock' and 'Num Lock' green LEDs, yet these never come on at all, so I get no blink codes. Only the blue LED's for the volume, disc, power supply, DVD features are coming on.

The claim is, it has never been dropped or jostled roughly. The HP doesn't appear to be getting too hot and the fan seems to work just fine.

Anyone know what I can try next? I have permission to experiemnt with the thing and do whatever, since my friend has already purchased a new PC replacement. I can do anything with a desktop, but have never tried to get inside a Laptop before.

Any help at all, is greatly appreciated.

A well known model.

Type DV9000 RECALL to learn more.

HP fixes this by replacing the motherboard. Consider the trouble shooting done.

Not covered under the recall.

But the failures are abundant in the dv6000 and dv9000 line. I took a shortcut on the full sad story by letting you do the research.

The failures are well known and the fix remains the same.

I agree Bob...

I read everything I could find about the dv9000 series, before I chatted with Upton. It seems the recall expired after May 2009. Although, I also think Upton sidestepped my issue just a bit.

The laptop actually belongs to my mom and dad, who are in their 60's now. They just didn't know or understand enough about the HP to be properly informed about the recalls.

You are absolutely correct Bob and if I pushed hard enough, maybe I could get the thing fixed for no charge to me. Just didn't want to make waves with HP over a 3 year old laptop. I own a dv6 and a dv7-they seem to be running along smoothly and are still under the warranties.

Just keep getting this feeling, I should have stuck with the Dell brand. I have two Dells and they are both rather old and still run flawlessly. Also got to help a friend set up his Dell XPS with Win 7 just last week and wow!, I envied him. Win7 is much quicker than Vista and far more stable, IMO.

Finally, was simply hoping someone at Cnet had a miracle up their sleeve for me, that I hadn't heard about. lol. I don't want to make a big issue of it here at Cnet and I really appreciate the prompt help we get here.

Bragging: Silly

Dell 8200/XP OS/3.36 P4/2 gig ram/256mb vid/wi-fi card. The Dell desktop is maxed as far as I can go with the mobo I have. It saddens me, that I cannot tinker with it some more. When I first bought it in June 9, 2002 it was this: XP OS/2.26 P4/256mb ram/16mb vid/hardwired

If you want.

To try, ASK for a pro-rated repair. I've heard of HP pro-rating the repair down to the price of what a netbook costs. In my opinion "worth it."

The issue and cause could be debated but in my opinion a sad story once you dig into it with other makes and models getting whacked too. You find it's not a HP exclusive.

You can see more by typing 8400M DEFECTIVE on google. It appears a certain chip mounting method didn't work so well in the real world.

Just my advice, so dismiss it without any bad feelings. Make that call and keep it nice. Talk with them about the recall and if they offer a deal, consider it. If they don't offer a deal, ask if they can prorate or discount the repair. HP has repaired what must be in the thousands (tens of?) of these so they know.

A possible way to boot, it works for me.
Dec 23, 2009 6:29PM PST

I have just posted above with a very similar problem, and I dont know if it will help but I can get this laptop to boot by very rapidly tapping the "F8" key and then pressing the power button, and continuing with the tapping for 5 seconds or so.

It might take 3/4 goes but so far I have always been able to boot it like this, and then it runs fine.

You do need nible fingers though as if you cant tap fast enough it wont boot and you just get the black screen and flashing blue lights. My wife who's laptop it is has only been able to start it once in loads of attempts!

My laptop is an Evesham who have since gone bust so I am still trying to find a solution if possible and hope its not the bad chip problem.

If it was the chip problem would it still run normally once I get it started? as it does run fine once its going, apart from a system restart that is.

Si.
