Question

Family Tree Maker 11 install problem

Aug 21, 2012 10:05AM PDT

I am trying to install Family Tree Maker 11 on my computer and for some reason I am not having good luck. It appears to install fine on the computer, but it will not open. I've tried double-clicking on the family tree maker icon and I have tried starting it from the start menu and it will not open. I have tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it three times and it does not seem to make a difference. After I uninstall it I've restart Windows just to make sure everything is out of the system so it would be a clean install. Then after I installed it again I restarted the computer again to make sure everything was fully installed. I am using Windows 7 professional 64-bit with 16 GB of RAM. I don't really know what other information you would need. I am hoping somebody out there would have some idea what the problem might be. I am eager to hear any ideas you might have. Thank you in advance for any advice you might have for me.

You posted in the Window's XP forum, yet you indicate in your post "I am using Windows 7 professional 64-bit "

I'm assuming the latter is the case. Confused If not, let us know.

(The link provided also gives instructions for XP, if it happens to be the case.)

Windows 7
Aug 22, 2012 7:44AM PDT

I am sorry about posting on the wrong forum. I will be more careful about what form I am on before I post another question. I do indeed have Windows 7 and I am trying to install Family Tree Maker 2011. To answer the other question I have tried right clicking on the icon and clicking "open" and "Open As Administrator" and neither one of them worked. It was mentioned that I should try disabling my virus checker. Just to be clear should I disable that before installing the program or just before I try to open it? Then the next question is, how do I deactivate it. I am using AVG free 2012. If it matters, I have never had family tree maker installed on this computer before. This is a brand-new CD I just purchased a couple days ago. I hope I have answered all the questions. Thank you for the answers so far. Hopefully with this extra information somebody will have an idea.

Still need more from you ...

since Family Tree Maker 2011 comes in three versions - Deluxe, Platinum, and Essentials and the compatibility page I linked you to shows that Deluxe is compatible while Platinum is not and Essentials isn't even mentioned. Take a look for yourself because only YOU know which version you have.-

As for disabling AVG this link steps you through the process -

Deluxe Edition

It is Family Tree Maker Deluxe 2011 that I am trying to install. I tried disabling AVG and that did not seem to make any difference. One thing that I have noticed is that after I double-click on the Family Tree Maker icon and nothing seems to happen if I go into the "Task Manager" under processes I find the file FTM.exe *32 in there. I hope that helps. Thank you very much for the responses I've received so far. Hopefully with your help we can get this figured out.

Try installing the program in compatibility mode.

Follow these steps:
a) Press the Windows + W key on the keyboard.
b) Type compatibility in the search box and then press enter.
c) Click Run programs made for previous versions of Windows option from the list appeared in the left side.
d) Select the program and install.

If that does not help, I would suggest you to contact Family Tree Maker Support.

I use the Family Tree Maker by Broderbund. They have an on line help,
world wide web. The program has a scrap book for photos, it creates step,
foster, and adoptive relationships, you can insert videos and sound into
the scrapbook as well.Preserving your family's information is now easier than ever. The existing
Family Page makes it easy to enter information about your family.
