False report of ZoneLabs under attack

Nov 26, 2003 9:54AM PST

A post by Jim - Team Z in GRC Security Newsgroup:

There was a rumor in a British Internet magazine that Zone Labs was under attack from a denial-of-service attack. This was news to us. Happy
We've contacted the magazine and let them know that they were chasing a false rumor. Here's the background on this topic.

***

Yesterday, the majority of the UK became disconnected from the rest of the Internet as a result of a fault in the TAT14 transatlantic cable. TAT14 is actually a circular fiber link between the US, UK, and Europe.

There was already a preexisting fault in one of the segments. When the second segment broke yesterday, the redundant path was gone and the UK was effectively isolated.

A UK Internet magazine erroneously reported that the problem was related to a denial-of-service attack upon Zone Labs. Zone Labs has spoken to the magazine in question, as well as to the ISP at the center of the situation, and let them know that Zone Labs has not been under any sort of attack.
