I'd say

In reply to: fake xp spftware or hardware problem

I'd say that since if you have a pirated (not fake... Don't help perpetuate Microsoft's bastardization of the word genuine) copy of XP, Microsoft tends to cut you off from security updates, you probably went and got hit by some malware. Which is one of those gifts that keeps on giving, even though you wish it wouldn't. Get one bit of malware on your system, pretty soon it'll multiply into 5-6, and then keep on growing.

In no particular order, here's what I'd suggest doing... First, get a legal copy of XP before it's too late and you're stuck with Vista. Once you do that, back up everything you don't want to lose, and format the system. That should clear out whatever garbage you've managed to pick up.

In the mean time, download some malware removal programs. AdAware, Spybot, and AVG Anti-Spyware come to mind. I don't think Windows Defender will run on pirated copies of XP, but it might be worth a try as well. That might help buy you some time, but it's a stopgap measure at best. Get around to doing the above as soon as is possible.

It is

Norton does include malware removal, but unlike virus scanners, one malware remover simply isn't enough. Also, Norton products have been on a steady downhill slide for several years, so I'd put them pretty close to the bottom in terms of being useful for malware issues.

And by too late, I mean Microsoft is very close to the point where they are no longer going to be selling XP at all. So, think of it as supplies are limited. Another 6 months or so, and you may have a very hard time finding a legal copy of XP anywhere.

Pirated XP help,

In reply to: fake xp spftware or hardware problem

Hi sethbandit

There may be some help for you to get a new issue of Win XP directly from Microsoft.
If you have your bill of sale, and all the paperwork to prove you bought it legally, Microsoft has a program that they will replace it with a new cope free of charge if you qualify. There is a lot of papers to fill out, etc, bill of sale, etc. The cd must be the same as original with holograms etc, no copies!
I bought a pirated copy on Ebay, tried to get help from seller. He wouldn't even answer my request. So, I contacted Microsoft and got the forms, filled them out and within 2 weeks received a legitamite verifiable XP Prof cd free of charge, complete with new code number etc.
Now, I have all the updates and completely legitamate!
Good luck on whatever you choose to do.

Sorry, but this discussion halts here.

That 'fake' XP is a pirated copy of XP. CNET's Forum Policies forbid helping members with problems with unauthorized versions of Operating System software whether or not the questions relate to that software.

You have one critical answer. Obtain a genuine version of Windows XP.

The other advice given is suspect. I am not at all sure Microsoft will give you a copy of XP free of charge just on production of a bill of sale. But by all means contact Microsoft and try that.
