Question

Faint buzzing from vent in back of tv? (UN55H6350)

Jul 12, 2015 10:59AM PDT

This might be a stupid question.

I just got a UN55H6350. If I put my ear to the back of the tv, all along the top where the vents are (and where I think the lcd/led lights are) there is an audible buzzing/humming noise.

You can't hear it unless you put your ear up to the back top of the tv.

Is this normal? Is it just the led/lcd lights running?

I don't remember my last tv having this, but then again, I don't ever remember looking.

I'm assuming it's fine, just want to double check.

Thanks guys!

might be several things

maybe a power conversion unit
maybe a fan going bad
maybe coil hum
maybe a failing backlight - with that you'd maybe seem some flicker?

thanks

So the TV is supposed to be completely silent, even with your ear to the vents in the back?

The "buzz" seems consistent throughout the vents/lights along the back top side so it doesn't seem like one small thing going bad.

No flicker or anything.

What's "coil hum"?

Thanks!

But most of us don't use a TV with our ears on the TV. These machines are not silent and I see a fine answer as to some sources.

NOT SILENT.

Most TVs have some noise due to many causes. The 60, 120Hz rates are common up to about 600Hz on some models. These are not noiseless. If you want a noiseless TV that stands up to ear on the set then you may have to try out models till you find one.

Re: Buzzing or Humming

All electronics will create a slight hum, buzz, or whistle during operation or standby. Depending on how pitch sensitive your ears are you may hear this noise. If your LED TV is making a high pitched whistling sound, hum, buzz, or squeal test these things.

Important: Confirm that the sound is coming from the TV and not another external device. In many cases it has been found that the noise being heard is coming from a Set-top Box, UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply), Amplifier / home theater, or other device.
1.Turn down or mute the volume, listen for the noise.
2.Have another person listen for the noise.
◦If the noise does not disappear when the volume is muted and another person can also hear the noise then there is an internal problem and you need to have your TV serviced. (Here’s the thread where you can get details on setting that up: http://forums.cnet.com/7723-13973_102-542437/service-issues-click-here-for-help/ )
◦If the noise disappears when the volume is lowered then there is electrical feedback being received from the external device through the cable connection.

You can attempt to eliminate this by:

Important: Suggestions are based on potential causes of the noise and possible solutions for the issue, but are not limited to the suggestions below.
■Properly grounding outlets.
■Using shielded cables.
■If possible connect the TV and external device to separate circuits.
■Use a power line conditioner with your devices.
