But we can't know till a place like www.drivesavers.com gets done.

Hey there, so I realize that this is going to be an expensive endeavor to get my data back - but I dropped my Toshiba 250 GB external drive yesterday. When I went to plug it back into my computer, it made this horrible loud whirring/grinding noise, so I immediately unplugged it. When I went to plug it in again, the disk no longer mounts on my desktop and does not appear to be communicating with my laptop at all... in fact the only thing it does is make this tiny groaning sound. Like it's really upset with me.
Anyway, I use it with my Macbook Pro OS X. I keep getting price quotes from 500$-1,500$... and I just want to realistically know if anyone has any idea what part of that price range I am closer to.
Unfortunately I am an art student and all of my (I mean ALL of my) digital work as well as all of my photography is on this drive. And duh, I was too smart to use another backup for it. It's my livelihood and I really probably MUST have the data recovered.
Anyone have any ideas of how expensive it will be? Or any places that offer a student discount or are on the cheaper end of the spectrum?
Thanks so much for your help~
