General discussion

F:\is not accessible

Jan 19, 2005 3:38AM PST

"F" is my Sony CD-RW CRX225E drive.
My OE is 98SE
My Disc Detector is Creative Disc Detector version 1.53
The message is "The device is not ready".
Here is the chain of events.
I was performing routine manual backup on a CD and when finished the CD would not eject. After the initial panic attack subsided I restarted computer and,lo and behold, I was able to eject the CD.
I then inserted another CD to complete my project and, to my dismay, the above subject message appeared.
I was able to eject it but kept getting the same error message.
I then inserted one of my game CD's and it worked fine.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: CD-writer not accessible.

If I understand you correctly you can use your CD-writer to read CD's but not to burn CD's. The first thing to do, in my opinion, is to try another burner.

DC, It Sounds To Me Like You Need To Start Over
Jan 19, 2005 3:54AM PST

...but the type of backup is important..Was the backup process done as a "multi CD process" which required the CD's to be placed in the drive, one after the other automatically?? If that's the case, then it simply sounds like the backup process needs to be restarted and created again.

Normally, if you place a blank CD in the drive, they are supposed to indicate that the drive is not accessible..There's not really anything there. But when you start a new burning sequence, the drive will ask for a blank CD and recognize that it has been placed in the drive correctly..

It appears like your backup process was interupted when you restarted and needs to be recreated and started from the beginning.

On the other hand, if you were simply burning single CD's, one at a time, with a new project creation for each CD, then you may have a different issue.

Hope this helps.

Let Me Clarify

Kees, I can not even open the CD in order to burn. I place the disc in the tray, close tray, open My Computer, click on [FHappy and the dreaded message appears.
Grif, You added "On the other hand, if you were simply burning single CD's, one at a time, with a new project creation for each CD, then you may have a different issue." That is what I am (was) doing, one at a time.
The CD-RW is not that old nor has it had much use but that is not to say it, in itself, can not be the problem.

DC, Bad CD-RW Media???
Jan 19, 2005 6:42AM PST

Especially if you are using a packet writing program such as DirectCD or InCD, it can sometimes be impossible to make them visible to the drive..Have you tried "erasing" the disk using your burner software or possibly reformatting it? Take the CD-RW disk out, start the erasing process and wait for it to tell you to insert the CD. "Maybe" it will recognize it that way.

On occasion, I have had CD-RW go bad simply because the packet writing software is unreliable. The disk was never able to be recognized by the drive and I threw away the disk and used another.

I would try using another disk and if it works, then you know what needs to be done.

Hope this helps.

I Don't Know What Went Right But
Jan 19, 2005 8:48AM PST

everything seems to be working now.
Here is what I did: I put a new, like in brand new, disc in and then I formatted it. Once formatted it announced I could use it like a floppy. I then clicked on My Computer, clicked on [FHappy and waited with clinched teeth for the dreaded "device is not ready" message. Much to my surprise, and delight, it opened without a hitch. So I proceeded to copy some folders to it and closed. I then tried other disks and they were also recognized.
Problem solved.
Having said that, I am not completely at ease with my CD burner. I guess I have a loose wire syndrome. No, I don't think I have one but being from the old school I always suspect a loose wire when there is an electrical problem and it gets fixed without me knowing what was really wrong.
As usual, I owe everyone a big thank you for taking the time to help.
