Question

Extremely high latency due to netflix on ps3???

Feb 2, 2015 4:18AM PST

Hi!

I've got a really annoying problem caused by a ps3 on the network causing extremely high latency spikes when streaming netflix. It's not caused by bad internet because I might see +10ms in latency when any other device streams but that's it even, even when streaming 1080p video. The ps3 just being connected is no problem, but as soon as it actually begins streaming my latency becomes awful.

I've tried disabling media sharing on the ps3, setting a static IP and disabling plug and play on the router but nothing worked, any suggestions? Thanks!!

<span id="INSERTION_MARKER">Ping test to google during netflix being streamed, usually I'd have a constant 15ms.

Answer
Sounds right.

Now if you put this on WiFi you incur a lot of latency due to how WiFi is non-duplex and more. 10 mS isn't much but gamers would scream.

Did you misread?

The main reason I'm making this post is because games are unplayable with the ping, it's not the +10ms Im complaining about, instead check the screenshot (3000ms at one point)

Again, it's normal while streaming.

You can find many prior discussions and the usual fixes are to replace the router with another that can prioritize the gamer's connection. Also, we know that WiFi is non duplex and more.

Spikes are normal over WiFi as it can be interfered with as well. I don't want to upset you but you are repeating a lot of prior complaints. Fixes are to get wired, and so on.

Not exactly normal

I understand packet loss and interference occurs but not to this extent surely? I mean 3500ms is a joke...

I've seen that happen.

Netflix's code varies from device to device. I'd be duplicating a lot of posts about that so try moving it as you noted.

Did you notice that 802.11n has only one non overlapping channel? And there are things that can cause trouble like microwave ovens, old 2.4GHz cell phones and more?

You seem to be new or in denial about WiFi. Give it time and you'll figure it out that wired is king, powerline is pretty good and WiFi, while nice can drive folk mad.
Bob

PS. Try the old tricks of getting wired, changing networks and setting the router to 802.11g mode.

Not in denial

I genuinely understand that Wifi isnt as good as a wired line, but wired/powerline isnt an immediate option, I've also altered the channel to cause less interference on the network, but like I say in general my connection is good/great but just when the ps3 is streaming I get EXTREMELY bad connection, worse than unplayable.

Again

It's been beat to death. Streaming can really upset the gamer so there are ideas to mitigate the interference. One of the simplest is to set the router to 802.11g. Well discussed why that can help.

If I stream on any other device I dont have this Issue with latency.. :/

Netflix code and that other device

Are different. I guess one could dive into 802.11n swapping around channels and more but since the code is not open source you will find folk complain over and over. We know this happens.

Is this reproducible?

I mean: take your ps3 with you to a friend with a router and try there. Also you might have (another?) friend with a another PS3 to try.

If no luck, try any other device that can stream netflix, like your smart TV or an android box. What happens?

Other devices cause no latency
Feb 2, 2015 5:28AM PST

Any other devices on the network streaming netflix (Smart TV or PC) cause no latency Issues, and when possible I shall try the ps3 on another network, thanks!
