Colin Beavan is leading his family through a yearlong experiment to see if they can live their lives without creating any waste, and therefore, have no negative impact on the environment. He is writing a book about the family's experience.
---
Colin and Michelle share a scooter to get around New York, and they walk up and down some 50 flights of stairs a day. He shaves with a straight razor, makes bread for the family and shops at a local farmer's market.

"The average piece of food Americans have on their plate has traveled 1,500 miles," Colin said. "That produces a lot of carbon dioxide."

Oh yeah, and they don't use toilet paper either.

Ooookay!!!

It says that they don't use paper towels and his blog says that he isn't going to talk about his toilet habits.

That takes me back to....
May 12, 2007 4:38AM PDT

.... the old outhouse days at my grandparent's small farm.

There we had to use catalogues, newspaper.... whatever was available.

That was in the 1940's and 50's.

Now that I think of it, a lot of what that family is doing is like it was on the farm! Though my grandparents did have electricity, they didn't use it much.

There have been a couple of PBS series in which families lived in the past. One was in Victorian times, the other in colonial.

We kids sure did have a lot of fun in re-TV days! And the adults looked as if they did, as well, sitting on the front porch talking, telling stories, and occasionally singing. My family did a lot of singing while sitting around the kitchen table.

The little girl is too young to later remember much. She isn't facing being taunted in school because she doesn't know what Big Bird is.

However, it is possible that her parents will continue to teach her good values even when they return to the 21st century.

I'm saving the link to his blog so I can check his blog from time to time.
