Question

Extract/WinZip firmware for BD E8500M no success, why???

Dec 21, 2014 4:53AM PST

I've tried on 2 occasions now ( version 1015 and latest 101Cool to Extract/WinZip the Firmware Update files from Samsung Web-site to a memory stick, including a Samsung Memory stick. However each time when I plug the memory stick into the USB at the front of the BD E8500M/XU, then run from Settings, Support, Software Update, by USB it simply displays no files found. Particularly frustrating when you go to all the trouble of following the fairly poor instructions provided on the web- site. Do all the decompressing, and end up with the B-ECBHRDEUC folder, containing the Image folder, containing the files. It certainly looks identical to the Samsung Firmware USB Key (Samsung sent containing version 1017), but NO FILES FOUND!

Samsung have just sent me the Samsung Firmware USB Key containing version 1018 ( have examined it on the PC and again it looks identical to the one I created using the Download routine on the web- site).

Can anyone enlighten me as to where I'm going wrong, or perhaps the web-site is misleading?
The latest Samsung Firmware USB Key comes with an instruction sheet telling me to uncompress the Firmware file to RUF file ( *.ruf) doesn't match what's on the Samsung Firmware Update site. Never mind hey, at least I've received the 1018 update. Does it work? I haven't installed it yet, call me suspicious/cautious I just want to see whether anyone else has managed to download this version successfully and is encouraged by it's apparent changes/updates??

Answer
Sorry but all firmware updates are done exactly as Sam tells

Or I expect trouble. If a model number is off the update fails too. Also, if the product has some other mainboard, it fails.

Time to tell Sam all about it and tell them to send techs out to get it fixed.

When Sam sends USB keys, the key should be ready to use. If you alter it, well....

Extract/WinZip BD E8500M/XU Firmware update download
Dec 21, 2014 8:05AM PST

Well, I disagree that all SMsung updates done as tell etc. they don't seem to work. I've even involved a couple of colleagues to have a go and see if their attempts work, but alas no.

When you read the instructions on the web-site, they ask if the files are compressed, one assumes that the author would know? Also, you don't get the opportunity to clarify as the process goes straight to download to PC, save or open. I've tried every way and still no joy.

Try it and see?

If you manage to get a successful download to a PC and on to a USB stick, which then can be recognised such that the UPDATE FILES are successfully found and transferred to the Firmware on the BD E8500 then I'd love to know the step by step method, please.

Many thanks

So far, 100% success.

The only failures I've encountered were on other folk's PCs. I can't guess why they use download accelerators and more but here the only reasons I've run into for failures are, accelerators, trying it some non-Samsung way and if the machine is not what it seems (the repair person changed a board.)

So if it fails, make Samsung get a tech in there. I can't see where your steps went wrong.

Is this a 2004 model?
Dec 21, 2014 8:18AM PST

I wonder if it's failed?

Also, to be sure the machine is clear of say, too many apps, I factory reset prior to the work. I guess Samsung should add that but some won't do that. For me, it's something in my background writing apps and more.

PS. Why I ask.

Many of those didn't support big USB memory sticks. I keep a few 2GB sticks around just for that reason. Did your chats note that limitation? Some folk forget such details.

Answer
OK, just downloaded that zip.
Dec 21, 2014 8:28AM PST

I did not extract ANY files from the .zip. There was a single folder in the zip that looks ready to be copied to the root of a memory stick. If you touched any files in that folder I can see why it would fail.

Or the memory stick is too big or the BD player is not what it seems (different board or other issue.)

FAT 32?
Dec 21, 2014 9:23AM PST

..as far as I know the stick must be fat32 formatted to work properly in a Sam and:

do a hard/factory reset on the player as already mentioned here?

Trying to repeat it all.

I may duplicate stuff you've done or written. We do know reasons why it will fail but it's pretty rare. In those cases, you let Sam do the upgrade. But I don't see you telling if it's that 10 year old player. Maybe it's just gone?

Rethinking this.

We seem to be dealing with a decade old player so it could have a failure or we are forgetting the past. A decade ago we saw only 1 or 2GB memory sticks but today those are hard to find. I wonder what you used or what Sam sent.

We also have run into UNLOCKED REGION PLAYERS and those fail to update. Sometimes the owner forgets but a little chat and they remember it was unlocked or went into repair. There's always some reason but at a decade old (you didn't write it wasn't) I fear it's dead Jim.

BD E8500M/XU problem downloading Firmware Updates
Dec 21, 2014 3:35PM PST

The devices was purchased 11/07/2013 @ PC World. Each time (x3) the device was returned with what appears to be a fairly common problem, namely Switching on/off cycle (found solution on this site, thank goodness), if there was an update it was done. However, as stated I've not been successful yet.

I'm not going to give up though, I'll go ahead and implement the latest update c/o Samsung today, namely version 1018. Hopefully this will have a positive outcome etc. Then I will delete all the Folders and Files on the previous Samsung USB Key ( version 1017) and try another download to this USB Key of version 1018, compare with the latest from Samsung etc. Then see if that will work. I'm doubtful though. Maybe there's one very important step that Samsung do which is not apparent from their web-site?

That's one odd thing I read while looking into this model.

Good luck with the update.

Still not updating firmware
Dec 25, 2014 8:33AM PST

Well, tried the Samsung USB Key with Firmware Update version 1018, but again the system reported: Searching for Update Files... Then responded: No update files found, please check USB device and try again.

I then gave the matter more thought and wondered if the ongoing problem I referred to earlier (cycling on/off following a current fluctuation) resolved by disconnecting the thin ribbon cable from CN2 socket, at the front panel, had any bearing on this latest problem. Consequently I put in my static wrist band etc and removed the lid to the unit, detached the front panel and reconnected the thin brown ribbon cable to CN2.
Then I tried the Update and exactly the same result, unfortunately the cycling on/off problem then returned.

It seems I have a working unit, with the thin ribbon cable disconnected, but alas I can no longer use the USB port to Update the Firmware.

Thanks for you help anyway.

I guess I'm lucky I discovered the answer to my original problem on here.

So the unit is broke or defective?

Sorry I didn't know it was borked. You may have to get it fixed first.
