external USB hub

Feb 13, 2006 7:36AM PST

I've just bought a USB 4-port hub. My computer recognised it and installed it, and my memory pen works fine plugged into it, as does my graphics tablet.
however when I plug my MP3 player in, it recognises it, and it comes up in My Computer, but when I open it it appears to be empty, and the software for it doesn't recognise it either. My camera does exactly the same thing, yet they both work when they are plugged directly into the computer. Also, when my broadband modem is plugged into it, the little light in my system try turns from red to orange, but won't go to green.
can anyone offer any help on this? I'd appreciate it.
I don't have high speed USB ports, but the hub says it works on both high and low speeds.

OS: windows XP Home SP1
processor: 1GHz AMD duron
RAM: 480MB

Does the hub draw....

it's power from an external source or the port it plugs into? Some USB devices will exceed the power supplied at the port.

USB hub

The hub draws power from the USB port, but the MP3 has to be plugged into the mains when it's connected, so it doesn't need to draw power from the hub. As far as I know the camera doesn't either because it eats batteries when it's plugged in, not sure about the modem.
