External USB hard drive not seen in My Computer

I have a Toshiba laptop running Windows 2000. I use a 30GB external hard drive. It used to work fine. Yesterday an application crashed (the external HD was NOT in use) and I had to hard reset my laptop. Shoet time after that I bumped the external HD power supply and I was notified about the incorrect drive removal. Later I noticed that I can't see the external drive any longer.
Current situation: the computer recpgnizes that a USB hard drive is connected ("Unplug or Eject harware" window, but the drive is not listed in Explorer or My Computer and I can't access its content. Any ideas about accessing the files again?

Try CHKDSK on that drive letter.

But stories in this forum note that the drive contents can vanish on improper shutdowns and removals.

Why are you abusing your hardware? (bump,crash,etc.?)
