External HP Writter not deteceted using USB to IDE cable

Feb 19, 2006 12:59AM PST

I have an internal desktop HW cd-writer I've been using externaly on a IBM Laptop via a USB to IDE cable.
After swopping it for an external HD a few times the cd-writer now intalls intself with the Yellow exclamation mark on Mass storage device in DM.
Other USB (A drive, printer) devices install properly with the same port.
Jumper=Slave
Running XP Prof.
Thanks

When I double click "Safely remouve device" it's not seen here.

Why the slave jumper?

All that I've used tell you to set it to master or cable select. None tell me to set it to slave.

And the instructions tell you which to use?

Also, most 'bundled' CD recording software will not detect said drive. Be sure to try CDBURNERXP and also the rear motherboard USB ports.

Too often this is a story about ports, drivers for the motherboard, etc. But such detail is left out so I mention this in passing.

Installing CDBURNERXP could help the thinkpad in detecting the usb writter?

The problem is that when I plug my writer into the usb port = Yellow excamation mark in dm.
Enabled in bios.
Tried from safemode.
Everything (including HD) else installs properly via the USB port.
Fresh install of XP Prof. (not a copy)
It's a run of the Mill HP cd writer plus 8200 series

This dam thing shouldn't be giving me a hard time.

Maybe the fact that im using an IDE to USB connection is what is causing the trouble.

BINGO! "Fresh install of XP Prof."

Installing a Windows OS stressed most since Microsoft does not install proper or current motherboard, USB and more drivers. I see no reason this should work.
