Question

External HD won't mount. DiskWarrior not helping.

Nov 17, 2014 8:15PM PST

I'm using OsX 10.6.8 on my aging iMac. My Western Digital 250 GB external USB drive stopped mounting. Disk Warrior doesn't see it. The Mac Disk Utility sees the drive but the partition is grayed out. I can run Disk First Aid on both the drive and the partition and the utility says they are OK. But it won't mount. What can I do?

put the contents back on it.

If DW does not see it at all, the odds are that the drive has retired from service

One of my old tricks is to put the HDD into a new case. This has brought back many a dead drive. Now it is possible the partition/format has really gone south so other tools to zero fill the drive might bring it back but before I do that I ask about backup.

Ideas. Sorry if they don't solve it.
