External HD Questions

Aug 8, 2006 3:12PM PDT

I was thinking about putting together (internal + enclosure) an external harddrive for my laptop. Before I do, I want to check a few things.

1. IDE vs. SATA? Advantage to one or the other?

2. I'm a little worried about speed. This may be ridiculous, but I'd like to use this external drive to record programs using an external capture card I have and rip DVD's to and burn DVD's from the external. Right now, my laptop has two USB2 ports - and I use one for the capture card and one for a hub that has a wireless mouse, printer, and sometimes an iPod plugged in. If that external hardrive was plugged in to that hub, would I have bandwidth issues with so many devices sharing one port and the external transferring data at high speeds (recording TV and burning DVD's)?
