External Harddrive File Access Problems

Jun 9, 2007 5:31AM PDT

My laptop broke a few months ago and I took out the hard drive and started using it as an external for a new computer. However, I can't access the My Documents->My Name folder; when I click on I get an access-is-denied message. All the other files on the hard drive I can still access. Is there anything I can do to get access?

Some possible relevant details:
-"Properties" says that the file has nothing in it.
-The computer I'm using it with now is a different brand than the one I took the hard drive from.

Either you picked the wrong hit, or you overlooked that on XP Home you need to boot into Safe Mode to see the security tab.

Will an external hard drive work within Safe Mode?

Mine did.

If not try Safe Mode with Networking which seems to help the few that needed that.
