External Harddisk.

Dec 7, 2005 7:31PM PST

Hi.
I have an external harddisk, which for some reason, my mac thinks is read-only. If it plug it into my regular windows PC, I can see all folders, and both write and delete objects. But when I plug it into my mac, some of the folders are not visible anymore, AND I can neither write nor delete. I've tried to uncheck the "write protection" field when I'm on my windows pc, but this didn't help. The mac simply says that I don't have sufficient priviledges..

Can someone help me?

If the HD mounts on the desktop, single click it and get info. Explore the permissions section to see what is going on.
Change as necessary.

Should work

It says " You can only READ", and it can't be changed.

When you say it can't be changed, are you referring to the fact that the option is "Greyed Out" or something else?
What happens to the permissions tab when you unlock the padlock at the bottom the the info window?
Is there a padlock down there?

It just appears as a text that can't be changed. There's no box to check or uncheck or anything similar. In another forum I was told that it has something to do with the format of the disk. It's NTFS, which I understand is not compatible with Mac OS X. Does anyone know which format is compatible with both OSX and windows XP ? Because I want to reformat it now..

FAT32

is compatible with XP and OS X.

It's just not as efficient as NTFS for XP.

It will work though
