Long ago friend noted that as they passed 4,000 files in a folder the drive went much slower. This must be one of the dozen reasons to go slower.
Be sure not to do that and after you make a backup copy run the maker's diagnostic on that drive. And then CHKDSK it.

Hi all,
I had my 500GB external HDD for almost a year and I noticed that writes are beginning to be extremely slow, not more than 0.5 MB/s. Reads on the other hand are as fast as always. Also, the device sometime likes to disconnet itself for no apparent reason.
I tried other similar devices and they all work well. I tried another cable with my faulty device and it didn't help.
I suspected that the issue could result from the fact that I have many old backups there with tens of thousands of small files (source codes, photos, music). Could anyone confirm of reject this?
Is there something I could do to get things back to normal, except the apparent claim to replace the device?
I am running Windows 7, the device is a 2.5' drive connected with USB2.0
Thanks a lot for your suggestion
