FAT32 is not damage resistant and the maximum file size you can create is 4GB. No fix is planned for either issue.
But don't count this as "backup" since it fails accepted criteria for what a backup is. It's a fine second copy, nothing more.

I have purchased a I/O Magic external hard drive for the purpose of storing a backup of my computer.
it is Model 3ISUB40HD25TG
When I connected it with a USB cable I noticed in 'My Computer' that it is listed as a FAT32 file system.
I am running WinXP Pro with an NTSF file system.
Will there be a problem using this external drive for backups? If I need to use the backup to restore files am I going to have a major conflict?
