And I see that not work on some external drives. Also you didn't tell if you tried the rear USB ports.
Sadly no sign of make and model of the gear so this is all I can guess.

I have a new Seagate Barracuda 500gb external hard drive but can't get it to work. The device is not showing up in Computer Manager or in Device Manager under disk drives but in USB Controllers one of the USB mass storage device has a yellow exclamation mark beside it which when I click it I get "Cannot start this device Code 10".
In Computer Manager removeable drive F seems to be my printer and a memory stick is removeable disk G.
I've spent hours searching this site and the net about this problem and have trying what others have recommended ,updating and reinstalling drivers etc. but to no avail. I also downloaded Testdisk and only my internal disk is present on its scan.
In Bios I selected Auto and enabled LBA according to the Seagate installation manual but I don't think it's being detected...
IDE Primary Master = main eternal drive
IDE Primary Slave = DVD ROM
IDE Secondary Master = CD ROM
IDE Secondary Slave = None
My system is a P4 CPU 2.4GHz running XP Home with updated SP2. In the instruction manual for installing the Seagate it states that XP has the drivers already installed ( do these have to be enabled somehow?). Even when I try to download a driver from the disk the Add Hardware Wizard gives me the same 'This device cannot start. (Code 10)' error.
Maybe I've missed something or am not doing something right, if anyone can help me it would be great. I've spent all day yesterday and today trying to fix this and its getting very fustrating.
