External hard drive problem

Hi, everybody. I really need your help. I tried to convert my external drive from FAT32 system to NTFS. After converting I can not have access to drive. When I connect it to PC there is a message: "New drive is found. You need to format it to use". If I will format one I loose all my data on it. It is not what I wanted. I run Windows 7 Home Premium. Is there any way to save my data on drive( this is WD MY PASSPORT portable drive)? Thank you for advice, I hope you help me save all my data ( I was overly presuming and did not backup data from drive). I would be most grateful for this help. Mike D.
