1. An out of date BIOS.
2. The motherboard driver package is either not installed or out of date.
I installed a Maxtor 200 GB drive into a USB 2.0 Hard Drive Kit to make a new external hard drive. However, every time I plug the HD kit into USB, my system freezes. I tried it in Safe Mode and it worked, so I tried a series of clean boots, adding drivers and services one by one until I found the problem. I found that the conflicting service is the Microsoft "plug and play" service.
I need to run plug and play so that other USB products can operate. I can't find any way of using the new kit while having all normal Windows XP services enabled. Is there a fix for this?
In case you need the specs, I'm running XP Home edition, SP2, on an Athlon XP 2100+ with 256 MB RAM.
Thanks in advance for any help.
