External Hard Drive has malfunctioned

Hi I have a maxtor external hard drive. It was working perfectly fine. I took it to a friends house to download some pictures from her computer and transfer them to her new computer. When i have come home the hard drive says that I must format it to use it what could have gone wrong and is there a way to fix it without loosing all of my own stuff for work and personal items as well. I sincerely hope someone can help.

Thanks
