"The router supports both READ and WRITE for FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, and Linux file systems (EXT2 and EXT3)."
Next time try formatting the drive in those formats to see if that's the issue.
I know many get to learn this the first time but it's not too hard to do. I use GPARTED to do that step. Google GPARTED if you must.

Can someone advise what External Hard drives are compatible with Netgear's WNDR3700 wireless router? This router allows for connection via USB, but Netgear's list of compatible hard drives is very old (from January 2010) so not representative of hard drives currently available in August via normal retail outlets. I previously purchased a WD My Book Essential (1TB), but it didn't work (even after a call to Netgear) so had to return it. Ultimately am looking for a minimum hard drive capacity of 500mg - but 1 TB or more is preferred.
