Not the best of filesystems but one that the list you gave all understand.

I'm always thinking about improvements to the household systems. And today, the question is this:
Is there a way to format an external USB 2 hard drive so that data files are accessible across most major platforms (windows, mac/os x, linux, whatever)?
Certainly I understand that binary executables may or may not work, depending on the permutation.
But with an appropriately configured hard drive, I would think thinks like scripting languages, images, audio files, video files, pdfs, etc. have cross platform possibilities.
