When does it pause

If it pauses when you first start to use it, this is maybe due to your power saving settings - internal hard disk do this as well.
One other thing, apparently there is a problem with the DMA setting in XP (although I am not sure if this applies to your external drive) - however, to make sure it is set - goto devices manager turn DMA transfer off then type apply, then reset DMA and then apply.
Being a fire wire model it will be a high speed USB connection so make sure you have the latest drivers from Microsoft as well as drivers for your motherboard.
Goto Seagate web site and download there disk diagnostics program - this will tell you if there is a hardware problem with your drive. Also have a browse of the Seagate web site for clues.
Hope this helps,
Peter

Bottom line.

It's on firewire. With far too many reports of issue of a firewire connected drive, my only cure is to connect it with USB 2.0.

-> Outlook? Grim. I have heard of no cure for this and the data loss issues.

Once the drive is corrupted, switching to the other interface may not cure the original issue since the drive contents are now suspect.

I'd had to move to USB, then start over on such drives. If you are lucky, you can save the files you can't lose.
