Since the connection is via sluggish fireware (don't on Windows!) or USB 2.0 the spindle speed isn't as big a deal from say 5400 to 7200 RPM. I have both and can't tell much difference.
The firewire connection is great for Macs and Linux but if you follow the forums, data loss on Windows via firewire is all too common a complaint. Please stick with USB 2.0 for Windows. It's too early to tell if Vista improved this area.
Why is that unit so pricey? I see cheaper at newegg.com and geeks.com. There's a 500GB for 180 and many others. Your price seems out of line. Maybe it's some "rugged" thing but I have this Metal Gear case that has traveled well which I popped some 300GB 5400 drive into and it totaled out at under 150.

Hello. I want to buy a LaCie Rugged All Terrain portable external hard drive after seeing it as the CNET editor's number one choice. However, I require some advice on spindle speed vs capacity please, as to which is more important, an extra 20GB or a higher spindle speed. Therefore, which is the better choice of the following? The 100GB @7200rpm for $202 incl tax, or the 120GB @5400rpm for $245 incl tax? It will be used with a fairly old laptop (Compaq Evo N1050v)that only has USB1.1, but does have Firewire. Your prompt advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks,Ian.
