External Hard Drive Blinks and Beeps, But Doesn't Spin

Feb 21, 2007 6:50AM PST

I moved the computers into our bedroom yesterday. I didn?t drop anything. Once I had my whole thing set up, I plugged in my external hard drive to find it was not working. The light blinks on it and beeps constantly, but I don?t hear the drive spinning. It?s an 80GB Seagate ST380203U2-RK.

I called Seagate for tech support. This guy asked me ?did you try a new USB cable?? I said ?No, it?s not the cable. If it were the cable I would be able to hear the drive working, but not connecting to my PC.? He then replies ?Oh, well then it?s most likely unusable.? Then he offered me their data recovery service which costs about 500-750 dollars!

Is it me?

Just try another usb cable. For 99cents you can pick one up at the 99cent store. Possibly the ac adapter? We have a check reader at work and all the lights blinked and powered on but no data to p.c. After buying a new ac adapter...everything was back to normal.

If you read other posts here, some get it working again in a new case.
