Clarification Request
Did you buy that license key?

Dropped drives are troublesome in that you never know if recovery is possible. I try the HDD in a new case then call it a loss if they don't want to send it to drivesavers.com

If you didn't buy the licensde key for the Seagate program, you must try other things. He offered one of the usual things: try the drive in another case. That helps if only the electronics in the case has gone south and the disk itself is OK.

Answer
not free

seagate recovery is not free so you will have to purchase a license. If the drive has been damage, you may not be able to recover the data in spite of being able to see it. You did not mention the external drives model but you can try going to the manfacturers website and download their harddrive diagnostic utility so you can run it to see if the drive is damaged, if so, it may be able to fix it.

One other possibility, if you have a linux live cd, you can boot to it and see if it will see the drive, if so, you can recover your files that way. For some reason, it will sometimes see drives that windows cannot see.
