external hard disk problem

hi, I hav a 30gb external hard disk which was working properly since i bought that. but recently, i dont no why, last time when i pluged it in my computer was not able to recognised it and a message came on the screen " The specified I/O operation on\device\harddisk1\DR7 was not completed before the time-out period expired". I dont really no wat does it mean. so i m writing here if some one can fix the problem.
