External DVD Burner USB 2.0 Driver Problem

Mar 15, 2006 12:16PM PST

I just purchased a NEC burner mounted inside a TDK enclosure. See http://www.imagestore.us/product.asp?pf_id=DVDR%2D3540%2DEXT. I am running Windows XP on a Dell computer 2.8 GHz. When I plug the device in using the USB 2.0 connector, I get the "Welcome to New Hardward Wizard" window. When I select "Install the software automatically" the computer searches for the driver and says that the wizard cannot find the driver for the hardward. Any suggestions on how to make this DVD burner work?

1. Try it on another machine.
2. No drivers were ever needed for these combos. But it's a great way to waste one's time looking for them. A bad tech would tell you to look for the drivers and get rid of you for a month.

Double check the jumper on the DVD drive. I remember one machine doing this when it was improper. Another time it only worked on the rear ports.

This advice extends to many USB things and desktops. Try the rear ports before you consider any service counter.
