External DVD Burner help needed!

Oct 29, 2006 4:32AM PST

I am pretty much a novice when it comes to computers, but have been looking to purchase an external DVD burner for my laptop. I have a USB 2.0 connection, and from my research I think that a Samsung SH-S182M model would be affordable and work for me. What I do not understand is the external enclosure I would need to accompany this drive? What kind of things would I need to look for in an enclosure? Any help and or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

It's simple.

An enclosure that holds that drive with the usual USB 2.0 connection.

But beware the speed loss. USB 2.0 is pretty speedy but even at full tilt you won't record as fast as the internal drives.

What about size or material?

Thank you for the help, but do I need a 3.5" enclosure? And is Aluminum the best material for said enclosure? When searching newegg.com I encountered hundreds of enclosures and could not distinguish much different between any of them. Thanks again!

Hmm, how would you fit a 5 1/4 drive in a 3.5 inch housing?

I thing for you a pre-assembled unit may be the best solution.

The one I made is plastic. No heat issue because it has a fan. There are a few thousand such designs out there. Pick a color?
